Nature Journaling for the Beginner

Join Nature Journal Instructor and California Naturalist Sarah Reid for a welcoming, structured workshop designed especially for those new to nature journaling. Together, we’ll explore how to observe the natural world more deeply by using sketches, words, and simple data to document the what, when, where, why, and how of what we notice outdoors.

Feel like you “can’t draw”? That’s perfectly okay—this workshop isn’t about creating polished artwork. Instead, you’ll learn approachable techniques that help you slow down, pay attention, and engage with the awe and wonder of nature. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity.

Beginner journals along with a pen and pencil for sketching will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring any supplemental art tools they enjoy using (though all you truly need is a journal or plain paper and a pencil and/or black ballpoint pen provided). We’ll spend time walking and journaling in the gardens, so please wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers appropriate for the weather.

About the Instructor:
Sarah Reid is a Sonoma County-based naturalist, educator and nature journal instructor. Guided by a belief that people protect what they know and love, Sarah is dedicated to helping others slow down, observe closely, and build meaningful connections with nature. She is a self-taught nature journaler who enjoys making this activity approachable to those who feel they cannot draw.
