Our Lady of the Moon Opening Ceremony

An interactive performance installation honoring release and renewal at Western Hills Garden, with conception and art direction by Ava Roy. Performance created by Ava Roy in collaboration with Regina León and Britt Lauer.

The opening ceremony will include:

A guided meditation and multi-sensory activation
An immersion into the luscious garden
An audience with the Goddess of the Moon at her outdoor temple
A simple vegan meal of soup, salad, and locally baked bread

About Our Lady of the Moon: Inspired in part by the Mayan goddess Ix Chel, whose realm is that of the moon, tides, and all things cyclical and surging, this interactive visual art installation heightens sensory awareness and promotes a contemplative state. A series of evocative signage gently guides the visitor to a towering ladder built of recycled California cedar. Incorporating elements of water, salt, bone, stone, and textiles - and set in natural environs - the piece invites meditation on cyclical impermanence like the phases of the moon and her pull on the ocean, which creates the tides. The live performance component places Ix Chel herself, played by actress Regina Léon, at the top of this temple structure, where she offers a ceremony for visitors who gather below. While inviting us to consider what we are ready to let go of, the Goddess also reminds us that we have what we need and all shall be well.
