Petaluma River History Paddle

Come down to the docks at The Floathouse Petaluma for a unique two-hour, gentle guided kayak tour exploring the river that once served as the region's "saltwater highway." Long before roads and railways, this tidal waterway powered the growth of the city of Petaluma, but also supported Sonoma County’s small farms and commercial enterprises, and supplied San Francisco, Gold Rush hopefuls, and markets around the world. You'll come to understand how the port of Petaluma was once the third largest in the state!

Offered by The Floathouse Petaluma—Sonoma County’s go-to source for distinctive small-craft experiences—this tour reveals how the river shaped not only Petaluma, but the broader region. Designed and led by an enchanting former history teacher and actor, the experience blends expert interpretation with immersive storytelling.

Enhanced by costumed actors on shore, guests hear stories from the perspectives of people who lived and worked along the river, bringing to life the ingenuity, labor, and daily rhythms that fueled a growing county.

Paddling in stable sit-on-top kayaks through historic downtown Petaluma, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for the river’s central role in Sonoma County’s development. Guests consistently remark on how much they learn—and many return to share the experience with friends.
