The center also serves as a key advocate for environmental stewardship, educating guests on coastal preservation, sustainable tourism, and wildlife protection. Whether directing travelers to the best whale-watching spots, advising on tide safety and local conditions, or sharing the cultural history of Sonoma’s coastal communities, the Sonoma Coast Visitors Center is an essential resource for travelers seeking an unforgettable and responsible coastal adventure.
The Sonoma Coast Visitors Center is a deserving recipient of this award for its dedication to enhancing the visitor experience while protecting Sonoma County’s coastal treasures.
This award recognizes a Sonoma County Visitor Center volunteer or staff member for providing an exceptional experience for visitors.
Al Ferrando, Petaluma Visitor Center
For nearly 15 years, Al Ferrando has been the heart and soul of the Petaluma Visitor Center, welcoming every guest with a warm smile, genuine enthusiasm, and a deep love for the community. His dedication goes beyond simply providing information—he sees what needs to be done. He takes action, whether it’s personally restoring the Visitor Center’s neglected rose garden or bringing Santa to life at local holiday celebrations.
Al’s impact stretches far beyond the walls of the Visitor Center. From waving joyfully aboard the Lynde Marine tug during holiday events to delighting children at Petaluma’s tree lighting and shopping stroll, he embodies the spirit of giving and community connection. His love for Petaluma, Sonoma County, and its history shines through in every visitor interaction, making their experience richer and more memorable.
For Al, volunteering is a privilege, not an obligation. His kindness, humor, and unwavering commitment make him an irreplaceable part of the Petaluma Visitor Center, and his contributions leave a lasting impact on both residents and visitors alike.

This year, she has taken on an even greater role as Vice President, focusing on enhancing Guerneville and the entire Russian River area.
