5 Fun Things to Do in Monte Rio

Monte Rio Beach, Monte Rio

Perched on the banks of Sonoma County's Russian River, the hamlet of Monte Rio has been welcoming travelers since the 1870s.

Nestled on the scenic Bohemian Highway, Monte Rio, California, is popular for its wineries, outdoor recreation, family-friendly beaches, and more.

Visitors to Monte Rio in Sonoma Wine Country are immediately greeted by a 1950s-style sign that marks this riverside village as a “vacation wonderland.” Indeed, visitors began flocking here by train in the 1870s and arrived in droves in the mid-1900s when the era’s big bands played in the town’s outdoor pavilion.

Here are a few things to explore in friendly Monte Rio.

Or follow the Russian River until it meets the Pacific Ocean in the coastal town of Jenner, where you can go tidepooling at Goat Rock Beach.

Don’t have bikes with you? Russian River Cycle Service in nearby Forestville will deliver hybrid or road bikes to Monte Rio for a small fee. Each bike comes with a helmet, pump, basket, and easy locks so you can simply secure bikes when you’re done and be on your merry way.
