Sonoma County, California, is blessed with three rivers, and this is your sign to visit these destinations for views, recreation, and excellent picnic spots for a breath of fresh air.
The Russian River winds through a large portion of Sonoma Wine Country on its way to the Pacific Ocean; the Gualala River meanders near the scenic Sonoma Coast; and the Petaluma River connects to San Pablo and San Francisco Bays. Life is better on the river, and this handy guide will help you get to know the natural treasures that are here for you to enjoy in Sonoma County.
The Russian River

The Russian River resort area is a vacation destination surrounded by ancient redwoods, where visitors can explore, play, and relax in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. This region has catered to travelers since 1877, when the railroad came here from San Francisco.
Visitors today love exploring the many charming towns along the Russian River, including Forestville, Rio Nido, Guerneville, Monte Rio, Cazadero, and Duncans Mills. Friendly local shops, wine tasting rooms, and farm-to-table eateries invite you to stop in and savor homemade pastries and coffee or a farm-to-table meal in this region known for its homegrown artisanal food, wine, and goods.

The Petaluma River

The Petaluma River gently meanders through the area’s famous farm pastures, linking with the San Pablo and San Francisco bays. The river itself is a tidal slough, rising and falling with the waters that come through the Golden Gate. Activities along the river include boating, kayaking, stand-up paddling, and bird-watching in the wetlands.
You can stroll along the Petaluma River in the charming town of Petaluma, through Victorian-era buildings filled with wine country restaurants, art galleries, and excellent boutiques.
The Gualala River

The Gualala River historically served a role in the Northern California lumber industry, and today it offers excellent swimming, paddling, fishing, camping, and popular beaches.
Nearby, the community of Sea Ranch includes the architecturally whimsical Sea Ranch Chapel and gorgeous coastal access trails along the Sonoma Coast.
The town of Gualala itself has shops, restaurants, visitor information, and the impressive Gualala Arts Center. The Gualala Point Regional Park includes an information center with details on Native American history and the natural environment.
