AVA Wines of Sonoma County: Russian River Valley Wine Region
The Russian River Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) lies at the geographical heart of Sonoma County, California, where top wineries source their cool-climate grapes and where some of the most beloved varietals set the standard.
The Russian River Valley is also where leaders of the premium wine boom — now household names — are inspired farmers, rather than wealthy businessmen.
Earning AVA status in 1983, today the Russian River Valley boasts 70-plus wineries, including passionate new makers crafting exceptional wines. Discover this scenic wine-growing region in Sonoma Wine County and come explore with this guide.

Top Grapes & Wine Varietals
By wide margins, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel top the charts in this AVA, and in that order. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc are next in acreage, but the small amount of cool-climate Syrah produced here may get more attention among wine collectors. Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer are also important.
The Lay of the Land

The Russian River Valley AVA does not strictly follow the Russian River’s path, which flows through rugged terrain to the Pacific Ocean. But rather like a heart in its shape, this AVA occupies a “sweet spot” roughly 15 miles wide and tall, which is cool, but not too cold.
During the growing season, warm daytime temperatures are tempered by fog from the Sonoma Coast. In the late afternoon, a refreshing fog bank often lingers in the hills west of Sebastopol. (It’s a good idea to bring a layer to this lush Russian River Valley region.)
